Mission Director

Jeff Borns has been the Mission Director for USAID/Southern Africa and USAID/South Africa since January 2010. A member of the Senior Foreign Service with more than 22 years of USAID service, he began his career with USAID working in the Office of General Counsel.  Before arriving in South Africa, Mr. Borns was the Director of USAID’s Office of Food for Peace. He served as USAID’s Regional Legal Advisor in Kenya and Ecuador, Director of USAID’s Office of Democratic Initiatives and Training in Peru, and Director of the USAID Office of Democratic Initiatives in Guatemala.  In Washington, DC, Mr. Borns served as the Director of the Disaster Response and Mitigation Division of USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and, in the Bureau for Africa, he was Director of the Office of East African Affairs and then Director of the Office of Sustainable Development.

Prior to joining USAID, Mr. Borns was a lawyer in private practice in Los Angeles, California.  He holds a Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College and both a law degree and B.A. in political science from the University of Iowa.  He is married and has two children.
