Acting Senior Deputy Assistant to the Administrator

Gary Linden is a career Foreign Service Officer and serves as the (Acting) Senior Deputy Assistant to the Administrator in USAID's Bureau for Food Security. Dr. Linden coordinates the strategic direction and implementation of Feed the Future programs in its 34 field offices and oversees the Bureau’s internal and external communications and staffing. Dr. Linden also serves as the Co-Coordinator of the USAID's Resilience Leadership Council. Previously, Dr. Linden held a range of senior management positions with USAID. Most recently, he served as Office Director for Country Strategies and Implementation in BFS.

Before joining the Bureau, Dr. Linden was the Deputy Mission Director for USAID’s Mission in Ethiopia from 2013 to 2015. From 2012 to 2013, he served as Acting Deputy Assistant to the Administrator in USAID's Bureau for Economic Growth, Education and Environment, managing the Economic Policy, Trade and Regulatory Reform, and Development Credit offices. Prior to this role, he served as Director for E3's Economic Growth and Economic Policy offices, where he led the efforts to reintroduce cost-benefit analysis to USAID Mission offices worldwide.

As a career Foreign Service Officer, Dr. Linden also served as USAID Mission Economist in Nicaragua, Office Director for Economic Growth in the Central Asia and Ukraine Missions, and Country Director in Moldova.

Dr. Linden received a bachelor’s degree from Pomona College in International Relations and a master of arts in Latin American Studies and a Ph.D. in Economics from The University of Texas at Austin.
