The Harmattan Herald Third Edition - July 2022

Speeches Shim

Welcome to the third edition of the Harmattan Herald! I hope you enjoy reading this edition which highlights USAID’s work reducing conflicts between farmers and herders in the Sahel by providing economic opportunities for women and youth, and the U.S. government’s continued efforts to increase COVID-19 vaccination rates.

This past month was marked by the effects of the war in Ukraine which is not only creating immense suffering for the Ukraine people but also affecting the people of the Sahel where food, fertilizer, and fuel price increases are compounding existing development challenges and humanitarian emergencies. These worsening conditions have the potential to trigger new crises as governments will be stretched to deliver critical social services and maintain stability.

With the passage of the Ukraine Supplemental Appropriations Act on May 21, 2022, additional humanitarian and development assistance should reach the people in the Sahel to address the rising hunger crisis the Sahel is facing as a result of the war and prevent additional democratic backsliding.
