Vietnam is in the process of developing an automated Customs ICT system, called Smart Customs, with plans to fully install the new system by 2023. A fully integrated and automated Smart Customs system will reduce cargo clearance times, reduce physical inspection costs, and result in fewer audits after cargo is released. From May 9 to 13, the USAID Trade Facilitation Program and General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC) co-organized an in-depth workshop in Haiphong for key GDVC staff to equip them with the tools to finalize business requirements and processes for the new Smart Customs system. The workshop was attended by over 100 participants from Haiphong, HCMC, Danang, and Dongnai provincial customs departments.

A fully functional, integrated, and automated Customs ICT system will positively impact the 120,000 business users who move their goods across Vietnam’s borders. USAID’s technical assistance on the Smart Customs system will help enhance Vietnam’s trade facilitation and competitiveness.
