Electric vehicles represent promising technology to help countries pursue decarbonization and improve public transportation. On July 16, the USAID Vietnam Urban Energy Security project organized a co-creation workshop with VinBus Ecology Transport Services LLC (VinBus), a subsidiary of Vietnam's largest Vingroup, and the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) to discuss priorities and cooperation activities. VinBus launched the nation’s first smart electric bus service in Hanoi on April 8, 2021, and has committed to manufacture 200-300 electric buses a year over the next few years. The buses will run on 15 bus routes in the three popular tourist destinations of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc City. USAID Vietnam Urban Energy Security also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with VinBus, targeting cooperation on technical assistance on operation and maintenance of electric buses; a monitoring, reporting and verification system for greenhouse gas reduction; and inclusion of electric buses in the air quality management system in urban areas.

Through USAID’s support, Vietnam will continue to develop clean energy alternatives and urban energy plans, leading to reduced pollution, more energy independence and more business opportunities for innovative energy solutions.
