To assist rehabilitation practitioners improve services to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), USAID’s I-Thrive project developed technical guidelines in cooperation with Vietnam’s Ministry of Health and the National Pediatric Hospital. To improve the effectiveness and implementation of the guidelines, USAID supported a workshop on March 26 – 27 at the hospital of Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Rehabilitation experts provided consultations on case studies as well as demonstrations, mentoring, and coaching on rehabilitation techniques for all rehabilitation staff  members. Results from this workshop will be used to improve the technical guidelines and provide further support in IDD care and rehabilitation services.

So what? By supporting improved training and mentoring for rehabilitation practitioners, USAID helps Vietnam strengthen their services to persons with disabilities, and in particular children with IDD, leading to increased independence and improved quality of life.
