In Thong Nhat district, 100 km from the capital city of Bien Hoa in Dong Nai province, key population members at risk of HIV, many of them factory workers with long hours, face barriers to access HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Because none of the health clinics in the district provide PrEP services, USAID’s Healthy Markets project supported Glink Dong Nai, a key population-led HIV services organization, together with Dong Nai Center for Disease Control and the Thong Nhat district health center, to implement the third “PrEP on Wheels” day, a mobile service to bring HIV testing and health care to patients.  Through this outreach, 20 new clients were enrolled on PrEP, two syphilis clients were detected and treated, and 19 previously-enrolled clients received follow-up consultations. Dr. Phan Thi Thu Huong, Vice Director at the Vietnam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control, participated in the outreach effort and shared her appreciation: “I feel so excited to join this PrEP event today; this type of event is very practical and convenient for bringing PrEP services to clients in need who are living far from the current PrEP clinics.”

So what? USAID’s mobile PrEP activities improve the delivery of PrEP to high-risk key populations in Dong Nai and are highly valued by local health authorities as a way to reach new clients with critical HIV prevention tools, especially those living in areas with limited access to HIV care. Through these efforts USAID continues to support Vietnam to meet its ambitious goal of eliminating HIV transmission by 2030.
