Press Release

HO CHI MINH CITY, March 3, 2022 – On February 25, during a visit to Fulbright University Vietnam (FUV), U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry announced that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide up to $16.5 million over three years to strengthen the university’s growth and sustainability. Secretary Kerry made the announcement during a fireside chat on climate change with FUV students and faculty.

“Fulbright University Vietnam is leading the way in producing tomorrow’s thought leaders. The United States has been a steadfast supporter of FUV since its establishment. I am pleased to be here to announce this new funding, which will help strengthen FUV’s efforts to establish itself as a self-sustaining, world-class university. This would be an immensely proud moment and legacy, not only for FUV, but for the United States and Vietnam, as a testament of our deepening partnership and friendship.” - U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry

The United States has been a steadfast supporter of FUV since its establishment in 2016. The new USAID funding will support FUV’s efforts to strengthen its sustainability and scalability, enhance academic programs and research capacity, and expand the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) within FUV. Launched in 2013, YSEALI is the U.S. government’s signature program to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia.

With support from the U.S. and Vietnamese governments, FUV has become a vanguard of Vietnam’s efforts to reform higher education as the country’s first fully independent non-profit university, advancing liberal arts education and academic principles of open inquiry, research, and critical analysis.
