Vietnam has a dwindling population of wild elephants with an estimated population of just over 100 across the nation. To celebrate World Elephant Day 2023, USAID supported the annual Nong Son Marathon in the Elephant Species and Habitat Conservation Area, in Nong Son District, Quang Nam Province, one of 21 sites in Vietnam that USAID works with to conserve wildlife. Representatives from the national government, local government, and community members cheered on the 700 runners, drawing attention to these magnificent animals in Vietnam.

This event highlights Vietnam’s commitment to uphold elephant conservation and create awareness of the critical role that local communities play in wildlife conservation.
