On June 13, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman joined the launch of USAID’s $15 million, five-year, Saving Threatened Wildlife activity. Vietnam remains a major destination, origin, and transit country in the illegal wildlife trade. The new project will work toward increasing the commitment of Government of Vietnam leaders, improving law enforcement effectiveness, and reducing demand and consumption of illegal wildlife products. Also at the project launch, USAID and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) signed their first bilateral partnership agreement (“Limited Scope Grant Agreement” [LSGA]), on climate change cooperation in the vulnerable Mekong Delta region.

The signing of the LSGA opens up a new chapter of cooperation between USAID and MARD on environmental issues. For the first time, USAID and MARD will cooperate to reduce emissions from the agriculture sector, the second largest source of emissions in Vietnam after energy, and to help the people of the Mekong Delta build their climate resilience. USAID and MARD are also cooperating to address the serious crime of wildlife trafficking, which threatens security, economic prosperity, the rule of law, long-standing conservation efforts, and human health.
