On January 10, 2023, USAID’s Reducing Pollution Project and the Center for Health Environment Research and Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Phu Tho General Hospital to establish a partnership among government agencies, hospitals, researchers, and businesses to improve the hospital’s ability to separate, treat, and recycle medical waste. Phu Tho General Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the province, generating nearly three tons of medical waste each day. However, the hospital does not have a  system for separating medical waste from non-medical waste. This results in expensive waste treatment costs and limited recycling of plastics. So what? This initiative will be implemented and expanded over the next three years and will increase the recycling of plastics in healthcare facilities while lowering the hospital’s expenses by 70%. The program is expected to be replicated in four other hospitals in Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Binh Dinh and Can Tho.
