2021 - 2023 | IMPLEMENTER: INSTITUTE OF POPULATION, HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT (PHAD) | PLANNED BUDGET: $1,895,120

In Vietnam, many persons with significant disabilities are cared for by family members and community volunteers who have little or no formal health care training. The country’s private care systems are also underdeveloped. The U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Improve Care and Social Assistance Services of Persons With Significant Disabilities (Hold My Hand II) project improves informal and professional caregiver capacities to provide care and social assistance to persons with significant disabilities and promote independent living.

IMPROVE HOME CAREGIVERS’ SKILLS

The project develops and supports peer networks for home-based caregivers to learn from others facing similar challenges and improve their skills.

DIRECT SUPPORT TO PERSONS WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITIES

The project provides home-based care services, and nutrition and safety counseling for persons with disabilities. In addition, the project is supporting the modification of homes to improve physical accessibility and providing assistive devices to improve daily life function.

STRENGTHEN CARE SERVICE SYSTEM

To increase the number of professional in-home caregivers, the project partners with the Vietnam Nursing Association to standardize training programs for caregivers. To ensure sustainability, the project is working with private and public health care centers to develop and implement ways to make professional care services more affordable.

IMPACT

The project will support 2,600 persons with significant disabilities, of which 200 will receive assistive devices and home accessibility modifications. The project is paving the way for an expanded and skilled caregiver community through peer learning networks, standardization of the Vietnam Nursing Association’s training programs for caregivers, and piloting of financing models to pay for caregiver services.

TARGETED LOCALITIES

The project works in Binh Dinh, Kon Tum, and Quang Nam provinces.
