HISTORIC HEALTH ASSISTANCE OVER PAST 20 YEARS

Over the past 20 years, the United States has invested more than $1 billion in health assistance for Vietnam to increase prevention and control of infectious diseases by building sustainable health systems that support Vietnam’s efforts to plan, finance, and implement solutions. This support includes assistance to help prevent and treat HIV/AIDS (through PEPFAR), TB, and zoonotic diseases. In collaboration with the Government of Vietnam and community based organizations, USAID provides funding and technical support to expand and improve services for the prevention and control of HIV and TB, advance local ownership of HIV and TB prevention and treatment, and strengthen Vietnam’s capacity to control and respond to priority global health threats posed by infectious diseases.

USAID COVID ASSISTANCE TO DATE

We built upon our long-standing cooperation in the health sector to strengthen Vietnam’s capacity to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. The United States has donated more than 40 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Vietnam and USAID has provided $27.28 million in COVID-19 assistance, including:

  • $4.7 million to help Vietnam prepare laboratory systems, support technical experts for preparedness and response, prevent infections in health-care settings, provide public health screening at points of entry, and more;
  • $5 million to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Vietnamese economy;
  • 100 American-made ventilators worth $2.8 million;
  • $12.24 million to help accelerate equitable access to and delivery of safe and effective doses of COVID-19 vaccine, strengthen Vietnam’s health system to respond to COVID-19, and oxygen delivery systems to respond to COVID-19 outbreaks;
  • $1 million to support the Vietnam Red Cross for an emergency response program in central Vietnam to reduce the impacts and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in flood-affected communities.
  • $1.56 million: Support to health facilities to expand COVID services and maintain continuity of HIV care during lockdowns; and, community level support for people living with HIV affected by COVID.

The United States is the largest single country contributor to COVAX, and through USAID, the U.S. government has contributed $4 billion to support COVAX’s procurement and delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to 92 low- and middle-income countries.
