Overview

In India, USAID aims to create healthier urban communities and improve livelihoods by increasing access to safe water, sanitation, and hygene (WASH) services. USAID partners to improve public sanitation services, train skilled professionals on septage management, and increase access to safe drinking water and sanitation services to India’s poor and underserved communities.

Highlight

USAID supported the launch of the world’s first “water-from-air” kiosk in Andhra Pradesh. The climate-conscious water supply station captures the moisture in the air and turns it into affordable and safe drinking water for India’s underserved urban poor.

USAID Partners with the Government of India to Improve Safe Water Services:

USAID works directly with the Government of India on its three national flagship programs Swacch Bharat, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), and Jal Jeevan, to improve the provision of safe water services and move the country toward sustainable sanitation standards.

USAID Leverages the Private Sector to Increase Access to Safe Drinking Water:

USAID is leveraging the private sector to solve urban India’s water supply challenges. In collaboration with the Government of India’s flagship programs, USAID has helped more than 178,000 people gain access to safe drinking water in 2020.

USAID Improves Water and Sanitation for Underserved Communities:

USAID is working with slum communities in 15 cities to improve waste management, increase health awareness, and improve delivery of water and sanitation facilities among the underserved. Working in close collaboration with local administrations, more than 573,000 people gained access to a basic sanitation service in 2020. USAID partnered with the Government of India and Google to map public toilets on Google Maps. To date, more than 60,000 public toilets have been mapped in over 2,900 cities.
