Press Release

July 12, 2022, Tashkent, Uzbekistan – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) delivered a shipment of replacement parts for medical equipment used to treat COVID-19 patients. The medical equipment, worth approximately $211,000, was manufactured in the United States by Zoll Medical Corporation and follows previous donations of medical equipment and vaccines, which began in the early months of the pandemic in 2020.

Since March 2020, the United States, through USAID and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has provided more than $18.2 million in direct assistance to address COVID-19 in Uzbekistan. This is in addition to 9.6 million COVID vaccines. USAID has supported a coordinated national emergency response led by the Ministry of Health. A key element of that support is building the resilience of the health system against future shocks.

USAID’s support includes procurement of medical equipment and vaccines, as well as supporting the Ministry of Health’s ability to store and distribute vaccines. USAID has also contributed to building the response capacity of health care workers to treat COVID-19 and to conduct disease surveillance. In addition, USAID worked with partners and the Government of Uzbekistan to help provide the public with accurate scientific information on COVID-19 and vaccinations.

In coordination with the Ministry of Health, the medical equipment has been safely delivered to 40 regional health facilities in the Andijan, Namangan, Ferghana, Jizzakh, Syrdarya, Samarkand, Surkhandarya and Tashkent regions.

The United States, through USAID, has partnered with the Ministry of Health throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. USAID continues to support Uzbekistan’s leadership in mitigating COVID-19. With the recent detection of the BA.2 ‘stealth’ sub-variant of Omicron in Uzbekistan, our shared efforts remain essential to ensuring the national health system is prepared to deal with COVID-19, as well as future outbreaks.
