Tashkent, Uzbekistan, September 16, 2021 – Today, the fifth international conference on integrated tuberculosis (TB) control in Central Asia opened in Tashkent. The three-day event is organized by the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, and the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center for Phthisiology and Pulmonology, with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), World Health Organization, KfW development bank, and the Stop TB Partnership.

The conference brings together more than 300 government officials and health professionals from Australia, Germany, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Moldova, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, the United States, and Uzbekistan. The event serves to improve government capacity to operate and ensure sustainable financing of TB programs during the COVID-19 pandemic and address pandemic challenges to TB control.

USAID and Uzbek Ministry of Agriculture sign MOU

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan agreed today to expand collaboration to support agricultural development in Uzbekistan. USAID, represented by Mission Director Mikaela Meredith, and the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by Minister Jamshid Khodjaev, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect on August 20, 2021. The objective of the memorandum is to strengthen the cooperation between the agencies in promotion of agricultural development through USAID’s recently launched Agribusiness Development activity.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the procurement of the licenses of two school textbook series developed by international publishing companies to the Ministry of Public Education of Uzbekistan. Worth $10 million, the series consist of Information and Communications Technology student textbooks and teacher guides for grades 5-11 as well as English as a Foreign Language student textbooks, workbooks and teacher guides for grades 1-11.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Safe Migration in Central Asia program, implemented by Winrock International, and its partners from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Uzbekistan have launched a digital campaign to raise public awareness about human trafficking and measures to identify and avoid being trafficked. The campaign will conclude on July 30, World Day against Trafficking in Persons.

Today, Mikaela Meredith assumed her duties as the first U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director in Uzbekistan. Ms. Meredith has almost 30 years of development experience with USAID. Prior to her new role, Ms. Meredith served as USAID’s Country Representative in Albania from 2018-2021 and USAID Mission Director in Azerbaijan from 2015-2018. She has also served in Yemen, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo and Washington DC. She holds a Master’s Degree from Columbia University’s School of International Affairs in New York.

From May 26 - June 4, 2021, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Central Asia Media Program held an introductory journalism skills training, an intensive five-day, online course for beginners, targeting individuals in rural geographies. USAID’s partner, Internews, organized the training in partnership with TBD Company from Kazakhstan and Khoma from Tajikistan. During the training that focused on strengthening journalism in rural Central Asia, 69 young professionals and students from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan learned about news content creation, fact-checking, and journalistic ethical standards.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) kicked off a two-day conference “Collaboration Between Government and Civil Society in Legal Reforms”. The event brings together 70 representatives from the Parliament, government agencies and civil society to exchange experiences and develop recommendations to improve the cooperation of the government and civil society organizations in ensuring the rule of law in the country.

The first pilot shipment to Central Asia under the TIR Convention

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with TCS Logistics (Pakistan), successfully launched the first pilot shipment to Central Asia under the Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) Convention, a customs agreement that facilitates the international transport of goods. The trial shipment cargo, consisting of herbal medicines destined for Uzbekistan, departed Karachi on April 29, 2021 and arrived in Tashkent on May 4, 2021 via the Karachi-Kabul-Termez route.
