Tashkent, Uzbekistan, November 10, 2022 – Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the launch of the second phase of its Environmental Restoration of the Aral Sea (ERAS II) activity. USAID will spend approximately $1.6 million to counter the adverse effects of desertification in the Aral Sea region by improving air quality and living conditions and by strengthening climate change resilience. ERAS II will focus on planting new forests in the Aral Sea region of Uzbekistan, building on the ongoing first phase, which focuses on the northern part of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan. USAID will promote bilateral cooperation to advance the restoration of the Aral Sea ecosystem and improve livelihoods in the region.

USAID Invests an Additional $5.35 Million to Support Education

17 October, 2022, Tashkent, Uzbekistan – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) added $5.35 million in new funding to an existing Development Objective Grant Agreement (DOAG) with the Ministry of Public Education. The DOAG outlines USAID’s commitment to invest $55 million to support the Ministry’s ambitious program of comprehensive reform of the general secondary education system over the period 2019-2026.

USAID Launches Vocational Training for Victims of Gender-Based Violence

Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a vocational and entrepreneurship training program for approximately 1,000 rural women who are either survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) or are at-risk for GBV. USAID will also support graduates in finding skilled employment and starting their own businesses. This initiative is part of USAID’s $3.4 million Women’s Economic Empowerment program supporting rural women in Uzbekistan through equipping them with the skills they need to enter the economy as skilled employees and entrepreneurs.

USAID Facilitates Access to Six Tuberculosis Medicines in Uzbekistan

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Agency for Development of Pharmaceutical Industry of Uzbekistan, has facilitated the expedited registration of six tuberculosis (TB) medications over the last year and a half. With USAID technical assistance, Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health adopted the World Health Organization (WHO)’s collaborative registration procedure for the accelerated registration of medicines (CRP) which facilitates rapid, safe access to new medicines for TB patients in Uzbekistan.

USAID Supports Karakalpakstan’s Women Entrepreneurs Reviving Cultural Heritage Industry

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a business development program for rural women entrepreneurs and artisans in the decorative felt production industry in Karakalpakstan. Participants will receive instruction in modern wool processing technologies, business training, and access to financing, which will help eliminate existing bottlenecks to industry growth. The program will contribute to the women-led revival of this ancient Karakalpak industry.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) handed over approximately 500,000 new, high-quality textbooks and teacher’s guides to the Ministry of Public Education today. The learning materials will be used in Grades 1-4 for Uzbek Language Arts and Mathematics instruction. The books were developed through a partnership of USAID, the Ministry of Public Education and the Republican Education Center. The new learning materials will be piloted in 919 public schools in the Namangan and Syrdarya regions during the 2022-2023 school year.

USAID helps return 35 victims of human trafficking to Uzbekistan

From October 2021 to the present, 35 Uzbekistani victims of trafficking in persons (TIP) were returned home and provided medical and social rehabilitation services with the assistance of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Istiqlol Avlodi non-profit organization. The Uzbekistani citizens were trafficked for the purposes of forced labor and sexual exploitation to countries including the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan.

USAID delivers over $200,000 worth of medical equipment

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) delivered a shipment of replacement parts for medical equipment used to treat COVID-19 patients. The medical equipment, worth approximately $211,000, was manufactured in the United States by Zoll Medical Corporation and follows previous donations of medical equipment and vaccines, which began in the early months of the pandemic in 2020.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) handed over crucial video conferencing equipment to the Office of the Commissioner for Protection of Rights and Legitimate Interests of Entrepreneurs under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Business Ombudsman). The equipment, valued at approximately $54,000, will connect the Business Ombudsman’s Office and its regional branches and will enable entrepreneurs from across the country to apply for, and receive, rapid assistance.

Today, ombudspersons representing five Central Asian governments signed two agreements intended to facilitate the protection of human rights in Central Asia. The agreements, which were supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), were signed at an international forum in Tashkent. The forum, “Cooperation of the Central Asian Ombudspersons in Ensuring Human Rights and Freedoms” was organized by the Government of Uzbekistan’s Office of the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman) with assistance from USAID.
