Yesterday, Administrator Samantha Power attended meetings with leaders of Ukraine and Rwanda during her fourth day at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, New York.

Administrator Power met with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to reaffirm USAID’s commitment to support the government and people of Ukraine in the face of Putin’s invasion. They discussed USAID’s support through the Agriculture Resilience Initiative (AGRI) to bolster Ukrainian agricultural production and exports, and measures to alleviate the global food security crisis exacerbated by the war. Administrator Power and Prime Minister Shmyhal also discussed preparations for providing Ukrainians shelter and heating as winter approaches. During the meeting, Administrator Power and Prime Minister Shmyhal talked through Ukraine’s priorities for the country’s long term recovery and how the United States can support economic development opportunities.

In a meeting with Rwanda President Paul Kagame, Administrator Power and President Kagame discussed USAID’s support for Rwanda’s development progress over the past three decades to combat poverty and improve access to education and health services. Administrator Power reinforced the United States’ continued concerns about human rights abuses, and reports of Rwandan support to the M23 rebel group.
