Today, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with leaders in the Ukrainian-American community to underscore the United States’ commitment to the Ukrainian people and to share information about the range of contingency planning USAID and the U.S. government are undertaking to prepare for a potential humanitarian response in the event of a further Russian invasion of Ukraine. In separate phone calls, Administrator Power spoke with leadership of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), which represents millions of Ukrainian-Americans through local grassroots chapters throughout the United States; and Archbishop Daniel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and Archbishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Catholic Church Archeparchy of Philadelphia.
On February 20, 2022, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with Janez Lenarčič, European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management to discuss the potential humanitarian crisis that would ensue if Russia further invades Ukraine.
Today, Administrator Samantha Power hosted a roundtable of civil society activists and experts from eastern Ukraine to hear directly about their experiences working in areas currently facing a further Russian invasion.
Today, Administrator Power met with Eva-Maria Liimets, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. Administrator Power shared deep concern about Russia’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine and ongoing efforts by both countries to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On February 15, 2022, Administrator Power met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director (MD) Kristalina Georgieva. After they affirmed their respective institutions’ commitment to the Ukrainian people, Administrator Power described USAID’s work and engagement with local entities in response to potential threats. They also discussed the need to continue looking for ways to support the Afghan people in the face of a worsening humanitarian and economic situation.
