Based on international law, a court in Ukraine recognized medical certificates issued in non-government controlled territory. This helped a retiree from Luhansk Oblast obtain a verdict in his favor resulting in pension payments. Lawyers call this a precedent-setting decision.

At the age of 21 Dmytro Schebetiuk seriously injured his spine and wound up in a wheelchair. Ten years after the accident, he succeeded in winning a swimming championship in Ukraine and was good enough to join Ukraine’s Paralympic archery team reserve. And he still found time to become a TV entertainer and host several popular TV shows! He also co-founded the public initiative Dostupno.UA, which inspects various facilities for accessibility for  people with disabilities.

Artiom was just one when, in 2014, he and his mother, Hanna, moved to Sviatohirsk from occupied Makeyevka in Donetsk Oblast. As a child with special educational needs, Artiom had few opportunities to play with other kids and make friends due, in part, to deeply rooted social stigmatization and negative presumptions around anyone with special needs in Ukraine.

Nataliya Moskovets is a sign language interpreter with 25 years of experience who became a civil activist. She specializes in court interpretation, so she knows better than anyone how difficult it is for people with disabilities to receive proper court services.
