Vira is an expert in pharmaceutical supply chains. A health professional, her motivation has always been to help her country and her fellow citizens, including those most at risk. For almost two years now, Vira has worked on a USAID activity to improve the distribution of life-saving drugs for diseases such as HIV and TB.

Still, Vira never could have imagined how relevant her profession would become after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

“It was really hard to sit and do nothing,” Vira recalls, thinking back on the start of the war. “When I’m busy, I spend less time worrying about the war.”

Despite being forced to flee her home in Kyiv for western Ukraine, and later to leave the country with her children, Vira was able to help the Come Back Alive Foundation (@backandalive), a Ukrainian NGO, set up a supply system for humanitarian supplies. She helped the NGO identify which health products were needed most and how best to distribute them.

The USAID activity on which Vira works is also actively supporting Ukraine’s Ministry of Health to receive and distribute humanitarian medical supplies to people most in need.

Vira coordinates transport to and from warehouses, which receive a huge volume of medicines, equipment, and medical devices from Ukraine’s international partners and donors. She also monitors logistics flow and ensures distribution to recipients in all regions of Ukraine.

“The process needs to be coordinated. The goods are coming in on trucks and trains from many places, throughout Europe and beyond,” she explains. “During the war, my team and I have managed to build from scratch a strong humanitarian aid supply chain, and use it effectively to provide health care to the neediest.”

Despite the hardships that Ukrainians face, Vira sees her fellow citizens, and much of the world, coming together for a common purpose. She plans to return to Kyiv as soon as possible: “I have no doubt that Ukraine will win. I believe it with all of my heart!”
