Today, on the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, we are reminded that trafficking in persons, also known as modern slavery, is a crucial development challenge, and an abuse of human rights that affects an estimated 25 million people globally. Human trafficking represents a threat to international peace and security. It undermines the rule of law, robs millions of their dignity and freedom, enriches transnational criminals and terrorists, and threatens public safety and national security everywhere. Today, we salute the courage of those who devote their lives to combat modern slavery, including survivors, and pledge our support to their cause.

Remarks

This week, we affirm our support for the freedoms that enable us to meet openly and to speak openly about the importance of faith in our communities and in our countries. But we go a step further: we invite each other -- no, we challenge each other to take up the mission that the world's great faith traditions call for. To live lives and build communities for believers and nonbelievers alike. To share a tunic with him who has none. USAID will proudly join all of you in that effort. Thank you.
