Locally led development has proven to be the most effective approach to ensuring the prosperity and well-being of everyday Ugandans. USAID Uganda’s approach to localization is centered on Ugandans leading the design and implementation of development. To make our agenda a reality, USAID focuses on adapting our programs to local contexts, shifting power to local actors, and fostering local partnerships. In addition, USAID directs more funding to local organizations and prioritizes purchasing locally produced goods to ensure that development efforts directly contribute to Uganda's economic growth. Nearly 60 percent of USAID Uganda’s activities are led by local partners.
USAID has worked in Uganda since the country gained independence in 1962. A Legacy of Partnership in Uganda is an exploration of USAID’s work over six decades to ensure Ugandans lead the way—from early institution building to advancing agricultural and education development, to addressing crises through reconciliation and rebuilding following the conflict in northern Uganda and responding to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Today, USAID Uganda continues to build on its work in the education, health, biodiversity, and agriculture sectors while expanding its approach to locally led development by partnering with the private sector, helping Ugandan businesses become investment-ready, increasing local governance capacity, building local market systems, facilitating trade, and expanding Ugandans’ access to energy.
