USAID contributes to the efforts of the people of Uganda to build and sustain a democratic, well-governed nation that responds to the needs of the country’s growing population. USAID actively engages and collaborates with civil society on activities to promote accountability, expand civic education, strengthen local media, protect human rights, and prevent violence in alignment with Uganda’s National Development Plan. Our program also assists in making the voices of marginalized people heard—particularly women and youth—and shaping the role of civil society in governance. This inclusive approach ensures that citizens enjoy a participatory style of governing and leaders benefit from the views of their constituents. Advancing democracy and promoting good governance contributes to enhanced stability in the country and the region.

PROMOTING ACCOUNTABILITY

USAID supports Ugandans to individually and collectively challenge corruption and demand accountability so that all can benefit from development efforts. Our activities focus on increasing the effectiveness of national and local institutions mandated to prevent the loss of public funds and improve service delivery. We are also strengthening citizen engagement on transparency and accountability issues. USAID continues to work with cities and local leaders so that increased local revenues are invested in ways that bring tangible gains to communities.

CIVIC EDUCATION

An educated and engaged citizenry is at the heart of democratic development. USAID supports local civil society organizations’ ability to operate, advocate, and deliver vital services. Across Uganda, USAID activities engage citizens, especially youth and marginalized populations, to be active citizens and participate effectively in political processes.

HUMAN RIGHTS

USAID partners with organizations to promote and protect human rights and demand accountability for human rights violations. Partners provide emergency services to victims of human rights violations, including psychosocial, legal, and medical support. They also advocate for the rights of activists, journalists, and other vulnerable groups.

MEDIA STRENGTHENING

USAID bolsters local media outlets and journalists to operate independently and sustainably through improved business practices and quality reporting. Activities aim to improve media literacy and counter mis- and dis-information.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION

USAID works to foster dialogue, mitigate conflicts, and prevent political violence. Our activities work with community leaders to develop early warning and response mechanisms to maintain social cohesion. Around elections, we encourage all stakeholders to commit to peaceful political competition.
