New Youth Development Program in Turkmenistan

On September 3, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new activity for youth development in Turkmenistan.  The five-year, USAID Youth Development activity, will be implemented by the QED Group and will leverage past and current USAID interventions to connect Turkmenstani youth with employment opportunities and create sustainable linkages between the youth and the labor market.

While the role of manufacturing is on the decline in advanced economies, the opposite is true for many emerging economies. In Turkmenistan, for example, manufacturing is experiencing an unprecedented boom, spurring job growth, and creating new business opportunities. Entrepreneurs Batyr Tanrygulyev and Ruslan Mammetseyidov have capitalized on this opportunity to start a new manufacturing venture, and with USAID assistance are seeing immediate success.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded regional Social Innovation in Central Asia program implemented by Eurasia Foundation, together with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Turkmenistan hosted a youth forum dedicated to ‘World Day against Trafficking in Persons’ with participation from 60 young leaders from different regions of Turkmenistan, and representatives from the Ministry of Sport and Youth Policy of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the State Migration Services, public organizations, and international agencies.

Ilyas Kudratullaev, 25, is an ambitious budding entrepreneur from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. He is one of over 7,000 young people from the country to benefit from USAID’s Enriching Youth for Tomorrow program, designed to prepare youth for the modern labor market and enable them to contribute to the local economy and their communities.
