The oases and deserts of Southern Tunisia have always been rich with beauty and potential, yet they’ve remained largely undiscovered by the world. That began to change earlier this month, when the first-ever International Salon of Saharan and Oasian Tourism opened its doors in Tozeur, Tunisia. The event, co-organized with USAID’s Visit Tunisia Activity, brought together local tourism businesses and global buyers in a powerful effort to boost the region’s visibility and economic growth. For 50 small tourism suppliers, many of them longtime USAID partners, the event provided an invaluable platform to connect with 224 national and international buyers, including tour operators, travel agencies, and online booking platforms. Through 596 one-on-one business meetings, suppliers introduced buyers to Southern Tunisia’s diverse offerings, from camel treks across golden dunes to locally crafted goods, sparking collaborations that will help them grow and thrive.
Experiencing Southern Tunisia Firsthand
To fully showcase what the South has to offer, the event included 15 immersive circuits, 11 of which were tailored by USAID. These circuits highlighted the work of 20 USAID-supported businesses, allowing 160 buyers to experience Tozeur's vibrant cultural offerings, Douz's traditional crafts, and Kébili's breathtaking landscapes firsthand. These trips were designed to provide buyers with a deeper understanding of the South's unique tourism potential while fostering strong connections between local suppliers and global markets.
Putting Southern Tunisia on the Map
For many small businesses operating in underserved areas, this event was crucial. The International Salon offered direct access to new markets and practical tools to expand their reach. Each supplier was equipped with a comprehensive guidebook featuring over 70 tourism enterprises, ensuring buyers had the resources to maintain connections and collaborate beyond the event. For over three years, the USAID Visit Tunisia Activity has worked alongside local businesses to diversify offerings, build capacity, and create connections that drive long-term economic growth.
