DILI, March 2022 – Today, the United States—through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting the Consortium for Elections and Political Processes (CEPPS) partners, the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and their local partners to support a variety of activities in support of a free and fair election thorough Supporting Sound, Representative 2022 Presidential Elections in Timor-Leste Activity. The presidential election in March 2022 will be the first election held in Timor-Leste during the pandemic. To quickly address urgent challenges in advance of this election, USAID Voter education and outreach initiatives will engage women, youth, rural voters and other traditionally marginalized communities, and the support of a domestic election observation mission will help to ensure electoral integrity.

Today, the United States—through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)—announced $1 million in new COVID-19 assistance for Timor-Leste to extend the reach of vaccination programs by engaging trusted leaders and civil society organizations to urge hesitant citizens to get vaccinated, especially in communities outside Dili.  The total U.S. assistance to help Timor-Leste fight COVID-19 now stands at $5 million.

With support from the United States through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Timor-Leste’s Customs Authority today launched a Customs Trade Portal that provides free and easy online access to trade-related information: www.customs.gov.tl.

The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $900,000 in additional assistance to save lives, meet urgent humanitarian needs, and help affected people recover from the devastating floods in Timor-Leste.  Heavy rains and strong winds associated with Tropical Cyclone Seroja lashed Timor-Leste's capital Dili and eight municipalities in April, causing extensive flooding and landslides resulting in dozens of deaths, destroyed crops, and thousands of evacuations.

On May 18, 2021, the United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Government of Timor-Leste signed an agreement to strengthen Timor-Leste’s non-oil sector economy and reinforce good governance. Signed by Timor-Leste’s Minister of Finance H.E Rui Augusto Gomes, and USAID Mission Director James Wright at a ceremony witnessed by U.S. Ambassador Kevin Blackstone and Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers H.E. Fidelis Magalhães, the Development Objective Agreement (DOAG) provides a first installment of $17.9 million out of an expected budget totaling $92.3 million for USAID’s five-year Country Development Cooperation Strategy extending through December 2025.

With support from the United States, through USAID, Timor-Leste’s Customs Authority launched its new Customs Hotline today, allowing anyone to report suspicious activities any time of the day or night by calling the free phone number “12200” or by reporting online at www.customs.gov.tl.

In response to the Government of Timor-Leste’s request for international assistance, U.S. Ambassador Kevin Blackstone has arranged for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide $100,000 in humanitarian assistance funding from the American people to people affected by the devastating flood in Timor-Leste. This funding is being used by longstanding USAID partner, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), working with Timor-Leste’s State Secretariat for Civil Protection, to provide house repair kits, including roofing sheets, as well as kitchen utensils, bedding, and other household items, in order to assist families to return to their homes.

DILI, Timor-Leste - The United States joined Timor-Leste to welcome the successful arrival of 24,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine on April 5, 2021.  This shipment was made possible through the COVAX Advance Market Commitment, a global initiative to support equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.  The United States has announced the provision of an initial $2 billion—out of a total planned $4 billion—to the COVAX Advance Market Commitment, which will support vaccine distribution to over 90 countries including Timor-Leste.  This makes the United States the single largest contribu
