Growing up, Shakhlo was always trying something new – she dabbled in drawing, astronomy, physics, knitting, and more. She loved to learn, and it was this insatiable curiosity that led her to turn one of her hobbies into a career.

Arriving in the Murghab district of Tajikistan’s Pamir region feels like one may have landed on the far side of the moon. The Pamir Mountains are among the highest in the world, and home to remote villages and communities living above 3,600 meters/11,800 feet. The area is dry, arid, and bitterly cold. Temperatures between November and March regularly plummet to -50 degrees Celsius/-58 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Khatlon region is well-known in Tajikistan for producing vegetables, especially early-season vegetables in high demand in markets across the country. Adolat Berdieva, a farmer in Madaniyat village, Jamoat “Vakhdati Milli” of Jayhun district, has been growing vegetables for more than a decade. Adolat’s husband travels to Russia every year for seasonal work, so she often works alone.

Hasan Nurov is from Navzamin village in Khuroson district, Tajikistan. For generations, Hasan’s family, like many farmers in the district, grew cotton. However, over time, water scarcity and low cotton prices created a conundrum for farmers. Should they continue growing an unprofitable crop, or instead migrate to Russia, where there were higher paying jobs?
