Dushanbe, Tajikistan, September 20, 2021 — Today, the United States—through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) — donated the first tranche, approximately 115,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine to Tajikistan to fight COVID-19. Later this week additional doses will arrive for a total donation of 325,260 doses. This Pfizer vaccine dose delivery to Tajikistan is part of the United States Government donation of 500 million safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine doses for the world through the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) facility.

This donation builds on over 1.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine the United States delivered to Tajikistan on July 26, 2021. COVAX has also provided 461,440 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Tajikistan in multiple deliveries. In addition, eight 258-liter Ultra Cold Chain freezers have been delivered and five already installed by UNICEF in the National Center for Immunization. The U.S. Government has also contributed to this technology that Tajikistan is using for the first time.

U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan John Mark Pommersheim stressed, “This new donation of the Pfizer vaccine will save even more lives. I am proud to work with Tajikistan to end the pandemic. By working together, we can stop this deadly scourge and rebuild our economies. We will continue to assist the people of Tajikistan defeat this virus, and we will get through this crisis together!”

These vaccine doses are part of additional coordinated assistance to strengthen Tajikistan’s health care system; procure urgent supplies that support infection-prevention and control; improve the capacity of Tajik laboratories; improve COVID-19 surveillance, response, and case management; develop and enhance public health outreach, risk communication and community engagement; and support the deployment of the COVID-19 vaccine.

These efforts build on decades of life-saving work and U.S. leadership in tackling global health crises. Over the past 60 years, USAID has saved millions of lives from diseases such as Ebola, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and now COVID-19.

Diseases know no borders. The United States will continue to partner with Tajikistan to end the COVID-19 pandemic, mitigate its devastating social and economic impacts, and build back a world that is even better prepared to respond to future outbreaks.
