Dushanbe, Tajikistan, December 13, 2021 -- Today, the United States — through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) — delivered an additional 153,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine to Tajikistan. Later this week another shipment of 146,520 doses will arrive for a total donation of 299,520 doses this week. These deliveries have been made possible through COVAX, a global initiative to support equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.  This week’s deliveries bring the total U.S. government donation of Pfizer (823,680) and Moderna (1,622,500) vaccine doses in Tajikistan to 2,446,180.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Central Asia Media Program kicked off the second annual MediaCAMP Eduthon 2021, an innovative seminar on media and digital literacy. The virtual event gathers university professors, schoolteachers, media trainers, and experts in the field of media and digital literacy from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Over the course of five days, with mentorship from international and local media and digital experts, participants will team up and develop projects on interactive teaching of media and digital literacy to various populations using digital tools.

U.S. Government Provides $2.6 Million to Support Medical Oxygen Systems in Response to COVID-19 in Tajikistan

The U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe, through its new U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission, provided to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection the first delivery of equipment associated with a $2.6 million program to support the provision of medical oxygen for patients battling COVID-19 in Tajikistan.  This oxygen support program adds to almost $5 million of medical assistance the U.S. government has already provided to Tajikistan to combat COVID-19 throughout 2020.

On September 28, Keith Simmons assumed duties as the new Acting Mission Director of the U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for Tajikistan at the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe. The new USAID Mission in Tajikistan demonstrates how the United States is strengthening its partnership with the Tajik people and supporting development throughout the country.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the tenth annual Central Asia Trade Forum, an international event promoting regional trade and connectivity across Central Asia and beyond. This year’s five-day virtual event includes 100 speakers and 4000 registered participants representing 39 countries including the USA, Afghanistan, Georgia, Germany, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, UAE, UK, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, among others.

USAID Supports Installation of Largest Solar Power Plant in Tajikistan

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) representatives participated in an inaugural ceremony for the new 220-kilowatt Murghob solar power plant, which will be the largest solar power plant in Tajikistan and the highest solar power plant, by elevation, in the world. The project also includes a hybrid energy storage power plant rated for 180-kilowatt hours.

USAID Supports the Government of Tajikistan to Counter Trafficking in Persons

The U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d'Affaires John Ginkel participated in an online close-out event celebrating the accomplishments of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)’s Dignity and Rights project, implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The Dignity and Rights project greatly contributed to countering trafficking in persons and promoting the rights of vulnerable migrants in and from Tajikistan. Throughout the event, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and other partners discussed achievements, lessons learned, and best practices to prevent trafficking in persons and protect the rights of migrants and trafficking survivors.

Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Administrator John Barsa announced the establishment of new bilateral USAID Missions in the Republics of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan at an event hosted by the Heritage Foundation. The announcement comes just months after the public launch of the United States Strategy for Central Asia 2019-2025, and is another example of USAID's long-term commitment to the people of Central Asia.
