Dushanbe, Tajikistan, March 14, 2022 – Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) opened a Resource Center for Nutrition and Evidence-Based Medicine at the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University (ATSMU).  This is part of a close partnership between USAID, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of Tajikistan and the ATSMU to strengthen Tajikistan’s healthcare system.

The Resource Center for Nutrition and Evidence-Based Medicine will be a center of excellence on nutrition and healthcare research and promotion.  Drawing on global examples of best practices, the center will give both undergraduate and graduate students new ways to improve the  quality of medical services throughout the Republic of Tajikistan, including information on ways to reduce child malnutrition and other related health issues in the country.

USAID and the Aga Khan Foundation Provide Water and Sanitation Access in Roshtqala District

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), through the Thrive Tajikistan: Partnership for Socio-Economic Development program, officially opened a new drinking water supply system and school latrine in Roshtqala district of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast. The drinking water supply system brings clean, reliable water directly to around 448 people in Medon and Savir villages, and the school latrine improves access to proper sanitation for close to 434 schoolchildren and teachers.

U.S. Government Provides Pfizer COBID-19 Vaccines to Tajikistan

Dushanbe, Tajikistan, September 20, 2021 — Today, the United States—through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) — donated the first tranche, approximately 115,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine to Tajikistan to fight COVID-19. Later this week additional doses will arrive for a total donation of 325,260 doses. This Pfizer vaccine dose delivery to Tajikistan is part of the United States Government donation of 500 million safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine doses for the world through the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) facility.

United States Provides Additional $2.8 Million for COVID-19 Assistance in Tajikistan

The United States -- through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) -- announced $2.8 million in urgent COVID-19 assistance for Tajikistan. The funding will support the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population’s efforts to coordinate Tajikistan’s COVID-19 vaccine readiness, delivery, and effectiveness; strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers; and optimize oxygen systems including by procuring the equipment and supplies needed for oxygen production, distribution and delivery to patients.

USAID and the Aga Khan Foundation Provide Access to Water and Sanitation

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and, through their joint Thrive Tajikistan: Partnership for Socio-Economic Development project, officially commissioned a new drinking water supply system and a latrine at School #20 in Safedoron village in Panj district of Khatlon province. This drinking water supply system will provide clean water to more than 2,700 people, and the school latrine will ensure modern sanitation services to more than 640 students and teachers, with separate spaces for males and females. 

U.S. Government Provides 1.5 Million Doses of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine to Tajikistan

The U.S. government provided Tajikistan with 1.5 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.  The vaccine doses represent humanitarian assistance from the United States for the people of Tajikistan and arrived on Monday, July 26.  This donation builds upon the $9 million in assistance the United States has provided to Tajikistan to combat COVID-19 since March 2020. The United States and Tajikistan are partners in controlling the pandemic.

From May 26 - June 4, 2021, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Central Asia Media Program held an introductory journalism skills training, an intensive five-day, online course for beginners, targeting individuals in rural geographies. USAID’s partner, Internews, organized the training in partnership with TBD Company from Kazakhstan and Khoma from Tajikistan. During the training that focused on strengthening journalism in rural Central Asia, 69 young professionals and students from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan learned about news content creation, fact-checking, and journalistic ethical standards.

United States and Tajikistan Partner to Strengthen Regional Energy Cooperation

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan, launched a new five-year, $39 million regional energy program – the USAID Power Central Asia Activity in Tajikistan. The program will assist the five Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—to meet their national energy priorities, reap economic benefits from cross-border energy trading, and improve energy security through greater regional connectivity.

USAID Launches a New Program to Strengthen Regional Water Cooperation in Central Asia

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a new Regional Water and Vulnerable Environment Activity. This five-year, $24 million activity will work in all five Central Asian countries and Afghanistan to strengthen regional cooperation on the management of shared water resources in the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river basins.
