Summit of the Americas

The United States will host the Ninth Summit of the Americas June 6-10 in Los Angeles, California. The theme for this summit is “Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future”, which responds to the hemisphere’s most pressing issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic; threats to democracy; the climate crisis; and a lack of equitable access to opportunities. As the only hemispheric meeting of leaders from the countries of the Americas, the Summit serves as the most important forum to address our region’s shared challenges and opportunities. The Ninth Summit marks the first time the United States has hosted the event since the inaugural meeting in Miami in 1994.

As Chair and Host, the United States will work with the region’s stakeholders toward securing leader-level commitments and concrete actions that dramatically improve pandemic response and resilience, promote a green and equitable recovery, build strong and inclusive democracies, and address the root causes of irregular migration.

USAID will participate at the Summit and host several side events. On June 8 and 9 Administrator Power will attend the Summit’s Inaugural Ceremony, join the Summit Civil Society and Young Americas Forums, participate in several meetings and site events, and host a roundtable discussion on food security. President Biden has an ambitious agenda for the Summit and the United States will announce new actions in five areas: Economy, migration, health, climate, and food security.

No other part of the world impacts the security and prosperity of the United States more directly than the Western Hemisphere. We are joined not just by geography but also by economic ties, democratic principles, cultural connections, and familial bonds. USAID will continue to partner with the people of the hemisphere—our neighbors, partners, and friends—so we can meet this consequential moment and reinforce our shared principles and aspirations of democracy, peace, and prosperity.

My own Agency’s founding was rooted in strengthening food security and nutrition throughout the hemisphere. One of USAID’s first ever programs began in 1962—Operation Niños—an initiative that, in its first three years, provided nutritious, daily meals for more than 15 million children across Latin America. And since then, our Feed the Future program is working in six countries in the hemisphere.

As the Inter-American Democratic Charter states, it is the right and responsibility of all citizens to participate in decisions relating to their own development. I would encourage all of you to expand your circle of allies to deliver progress for your citizens and know that USAID will be behind you.
