U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Alaina B. Teplitz announced the first grants awarded through the U.S. government’s Clean Cities, Blue Ocean program yesterday, totaling $345,000. These grants to Sri Lankan organizations will fund projects that help protect Sri Lanka’s cities and marine resources from plastic pollution. Dr. Anil Jasinghe, Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, joined Ambassador Teplitz at the event.
With support from the United States, the Colombo Law Society (CLS) recently launched a mobile application that provides members with access to online legal resources and court calendars. With court calendars and law reports at their fingertips, lawyers will be able to better serve the public.
The goal of USAID/Sri Lanka’s 2021-2025 CDCS is a democratic and more inclusive and self-reliant Indo-Pacific partner. This goal reflects the ideas underpinning USAID’s Journey to Self-Reliance and the U.S. Government’s support for a free and open Indo-Pacific, as well as Sri Lankan priorities articulated in its Vision for Prosperity and Splendour.

Women’s groups representing Sri Lanka’s diverse communities celebrated the success of a pop-up handicrafts market supported by the U.S. government and the Kandy District Secretariat in commemoration of International Women’s Day.

Twenty women from Matara celebrated International Women’s Day today by participating in an innovative entrepreneurship training program supported by the U.S. government in partnership with Sri Lanka’s Department of Samurdhi Development. Representatives from the U.S. and Sri Lankan governments welcomed the women and announced the expansion of the program to an additional 7,500 participants in six districts in Sri Lanka.
