WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development today announced two new public-private partnerships in Kingston, Jamaica, designed to promote economic growth and increase educational opportunities for Jamaica's neediest people.

The Jamaican National Building Society, one of Jamaica's oldest banks, will work with USAID to create the Social Enterprise Boost Initiative, designed to create and incubate social enterprises in poor communities. The Initiative seeks to increase investment in poor communities and bring more people into the formal economy.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development and Kimberly-Clark Corporation, a global manufacturer of health and hygiene products, announced today that they will work together to improve maternal and child health in the Andean region, starting in Colombia and Ecuador.

The new partnership will link the U.S. Government's Global Health and Feed the Future initiatives to Kimberly-Clark's existing programs, which already reach thousands of new and expecting mothers in poor communities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting the development and evaluation of behavioral approaches to tackle household air pollution. Half of the world's population cooks with solid fuels on poorly functioning stoves or open fires, primarily using wood or other biomass. Nearly 2 million people, mostly women and children, die each year as a consequence of household air pollution levels that are typically 100 times greater than World Health Organization air quality guidelines.

At the conclusion of his remarks he presented the 10th Anniversary Private-Sector Development Partner Award to The Coca-Cola Company, which has implemented more than two dozen programs over nearly a decade demonstrating how the U.S. Government and corporations can work together to solve global problems.

Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Deputy Administrator Donald Steinberg swore in Dr. Barry K. Primm as the new Mission Director for Sudan. He is the first Mission Director to lead USAID's assistance to Sudan following the secession of South Sudan in July, when the former Sudan field office in Juba was designated the new USAID Mission in South Sudan.

She will accompany U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs Jose W. Fernandez and Acting Special Representative for Global Food Security Jonathan Shrier.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Office in Baku on September 29th signed a grant agreement to collaborate on combating trafficking in persons and improving access to the justice system in Azerbaijan. Michael Greene, USAID Azerbaijan Mission Director, and Ambassador Koray Targay, Head of OSCE Office in Baku, signed the agreement.

On September 29, senior U.S. and Salvadoran officials continued discussions on an aggressive set of actions designed to increase economic growth in El Salvador. The discussions, which were carried out under the aegis of President Obama's Partnership for Growth (PFG) effort with El Salvador, included representatives from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Departments of State, Justice, Treasury and Commerce, along with a Salvadoran delegation headed by Technical Secretary Dr. Alexander Segovia in Washington.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On September 26th, Mara Rudman joined the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) as the Assistant Administrator for the Middle East Bureau, having been confirmed by the United States Senate on September 13, 2011.

Nominated by President Obama in February, Rudman joins the USAID leadership team with an aim to ensure that the best and most innovative initiatives are implemented effectively in the Middle East region.

A team of three from American University was selected the Washington winner of the first U.S.-Russia Codeathon, a weekend-long, trans-Atlantic gathering of volunteer computer programmers and civil society experts taking place in both Moscow and Washington, D.C. The 30-hour-long, timed event saw software designers or computer science students in both locations work to address challenges and issues related to open governance in both countries that had been raised by civil society groups as part of the expanded dialogue between U.S. and Russian civil society organizations, which is part of the Obama-Medvedev Bilateral Presidential Commission (BPC).

On September 21, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. Department of State hosted a half-day conference that brought together 50 representatives from the private, academic, and not-for-profit sectors involved in promoting and spurring entrepreneurship around the world.
