The Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Senegal, Mr. Peter Trenchard, the Governor of Saint-Louis, Mr. Alioune Badara Samb, and the National Medical Store (PNA) Director, Dr. Annette Seck Ndiaye, inaugurated the renovated Regional Medical Store (Pharmacie Régionale d’Approvisionnement, or PRA) in Saint-Louis on Thursday 16th December during an official ceremony.
The USAID-financed Global Health Supply Chain - Technical Assistance (GHSC-TA) project and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) renovated and equipped the warehouse at a cost of approximately 350,000,000 FCFA ($700,000 US) to ensure that essential medications are stored in optimal conditions.
The renovated warehouse includes warehouse floors coated with epoxy resin for better circulation of pallet trucks and carts; compartmentalized space to better conserve heat-sensitive products, and increased warehouse storage capacity. These upgrades allow the storage of essential health products in optimal conditions.
USAID provided 2.6 billion FCFA ($4.75 million US) over four years (2017-2021) to strengthen Senegalese supply chain systems and ensure timely access to quality health commodities. In collaboration with the PNA, USAID renovated two other PRAs in Fatick and Diourbel. The renovation for all three warehouses cost approximately 985,000,000 FCFA ($1,700,000 US).
Working alongside the Ministry of Health and other partners to improve the health of the Senegalese people for the past 60 year, USAID continues to be the largest donor to Senegal’s health sector, contributing over $60 million annually.
