USAID 60th anniversary

Women’s Empowerment and Entrepreneurship in Senegal

USAID has been in Senegal since the passing of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 which effectively established the Agency to combine the efforts of various foreign assistance programs. For these past six decades USAID has worked together with Senegal and its development partners to create sustainable solutions to economic challenges. A key component to this partnership is to encourage and support the economic growth of women to improve the everyday lives of Senegalese families. In celebration of the 60 year anniversary of USAID in Senegal, the stories of eight women who have benefited from USAID activities and projects in the country are featured.

Dieynaba Diop, determined and experienced in training and leadership

Dieynaba Diop is a leader and trainer in Positive Youth Development. Facilitated by the Feed the Future Senegal Youth in Agriculture program, an initiative from the U.S. Government, the program provides opportunities for young people to build skills and exercise leadership in their communities. In addition, programs that involve universities, extension services, local organizations, government, schools and the private sector can be tremendous catalysts for change.

Dieynaba describes herself as a horticulture technician, and a rural agriculture advisor. As a Positive Youth Development trainer she helps young people in her neighborhood become leaders, entrepreneurs, decision-makers, and initiators, bringing positive change to their communities. As she explains, “We provide them with a framework of listening, sharing, decision making, self-confidence gaining and above all community service.”

Positive Youth Development activities raise awareness of potential income-generating activities and provide the capacity for youth to participate in the economy, with a particular focus on environmental preservation. Association with 4-H clubs has increased youth confidence and leadership in their neighborhoods. Deiynaba has also encouraged young members to join the fight against COVID-19, by raising funds and distributing quality masks to the people of Guediawaye in Senegal’s regional capital.
