On September 20 to 24, 2022, Deputy Administrator Paloma Adams-Allen traveled to Guatemala and Honduras to view USAID’s development work first-hand and meet with government officials, partners, and communities. During the trip, the Deputy Administrator also met with the USAID workforce to discuss management and operational issues in order to better understand how to support our Missions. 

In Guatemala, she met with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the U.S.-Guatemala development partnership, particularly in response to irregular migration. She met with Indigenous leaders and organizations including the Chajul Municipal Office for Women, which is mobilizing resources to promote inclusive development and economic opportunities for women. She also met with civil society organizations to express continued support to civic leaders pressing for government transparency, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.

In Quetzaltenango, Deputy Administrator Paloma Adams-Allen visited a tomato producer and farm owner benefitting from USAID assistance to learn more about how USAID programs help reduce hunger, malnutrition, and poverty through sustainable rural development. During this visit, she announced that USAID Guatemala will receive an additional $20 million dollars to expand agricultural and food security activities. 

In Honduras, she visited a workforce development activity that links young people to private-sector employers, and engaged with small business owners to learn more about how USAID support is growing critical sectors of the Honduran economy. She met with USAID and local partners leading efforts to combat gender-based violence at the community level. She also met with civil society organizations to discuss issues such as anti-corruption and civic space.

During her stops in both countries, Deputy Administrator Adams-Allen visited various USAID projects focused on aid localization; food security; economic development; preventing and responding to gender-based violence; and working with Indigenous Peoples, women, and youth.
