Transforming Lives

Every day, all over the world, USAID brings peace to those who endure violence, health to those who struggle with sickness, and prosperity to those who live in poverty. It is these individuals — these uncounted thousands of lives — that are the true measure of USAID’s successes and the true face of USAID's programs.

July 2014—For victims of trafficking, Kazakhstan serves as a destination, transit and source country. Kazakhstan remains attractive as a destination for citizens from less economically stable countries of Central Asia. For those being trafficked from Kazakhstan, the main destination countries are Russia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.

July 2014—Because monotowns—towns dominated by a single factory or industry—are vulnerable to economic disruptions, Kazakhstan is working to diversify its local economies.

July 2014In Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire, there are approximately 19,000 motorcycle taxi drivers, many of whom are ex-combatants. Following the 2010-2011 post-electoral crisis, ex-rebel officers continued to manipulate their former forces, now turned “moto-taxi” drivers, by forcing them to hand over their daily taxi fares. The former rebel leaders also used their political influence to ensure moto-taxi drivers were not held accountable by state law enforcement, thus encouraging the drivers to engage in illegal activities to earn extra money.

Kosova ka prodhuar për herë të parë kulturën e asparagut në vitin 2014, duke shënuar kulminacionin e përpjekjes trevjeçare të USAID-i për të paraqitë kultivimin e delikatesës pranverore.

2014-te nova mogućnost za kosovske poljoprivrednike je dala svoje prve, nežne mladice, samo da bi ih videla brzo ubrane, ohlađene, spakovane i prodate oduševljenoj javnosti.

Kosovo je u 2014. g, po prvi put, ikada, proizvelo usev asparagusa, obeleževajući kulminaciju trogodišnjih napora USAID-a da uvede uzgoj prolećnog delikatesa.

Tokom svoje debitantske osmonedeljne sezone, 11 domaćih uzgajivača je prodalo više od dve tone mladica/pera asparagusa. Uzgajivači su zajednički brendirali asparagus kao Viridis, što je latinska reč za mlado, zeleno i sveže.

USAID and its implementing partner Jhpiego aim to ensure that the populations of South Sudan’s Western and Central Equatoria States—approximately 2 million people—have access to an integrated package of primary health care services, including prenatal and safe birth assistance. Other donors are focusing similar efforts in South Sudan’s other eight states at the request of the Ministry of Health.

June 2014—Alice Mtune is 32 years old and a mother to six children. The youngest was born in September 2013 at the Msulwa Dispensary in Kwale County, about 58 kilometers from the coastal town of Mombasa, Kenya. She is pleased with the care she received at the dispensary.

July 2014—Grace Children’s Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, has well-run pharmacies, but like many hospitals and clinics in developing countries, it has struggled to properly store and dispose of expired medicines and other pharmaceutical waste.

The Mothers and Infants, Safe, Healthy and Alive (MAISHA) program, supported by USAID, is working to increase access and demand for maternal, newborn and child health services in Tanzania. MAISHA, in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania, has provided pre- and postnatal care to over 25,000 women in rural communities over the past six years.
