The United States Government has committed an additional $3 million to address second-order impacts of COVID-19 in Amazon jungle regions of Peru, including Loreto and Ucayali, where 25 percent of those tested test positive. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it is providing this assistance in alliance with Peruvian non-profit organization CEDRO and Rainforest Foundation US, along with Microfinanzas Prisma and other private partners. This Alliance will focus particularly on the needs of indigenous communities.
USAID will support the Government of Peru to: (1) mobilize community health promoters and deploy a risk communication and engagement strategy that reaches 400,000 people; (2) expand psychosocial services through training of 630 mental health professionals; and (3) deliver financial education and business development assistance to 4,000 people and 400 micro, small-, and medium- sized enterprises, helping them access 2,000 new loans from financial institutions.
