Yackxeri Vela is an environmental monitor and member of RONAP, an Amazon Brazil nut Gatherers Association that contributes to the conservation of Amazon Brazil nut forests. RONAP is part of the Environmental Crimes Monitoring Network in Madre de Dios and helps monitor, report and prevent environmental crimes. The Amazon Brazil nut concessionaire is allowed to collect the fruits that fall from the trees and thanks to this, the farmer assumes the responsibility of protecting the forest. With USAID’s support, the Madre De Dios Environmental Crimes Monitoring Network was consolidated handling early satellite alerts, carrying out monitoring, identifying and reporting changes in land use, invasions and other crimes.
