The Better Health for Afghan Mothers and Children Project helps sustain improvements in maternal, newborn, and child (MNCH) health outcomes. The project supports infant and young child feeding, immunization, pneumonia case management, diarrheal disease prevention/case management including a zinc supplementation pilot, and safe maternal and newborn care at the community and facility-based levels. Barriers to access are addressed by expanding the roles of community health workers and midwives, providing better quality of services by improving the competency and supervision of health services providers, and increasing equity through the active engagement of influential leaders and the community. The Ministry of Public Health and two Afghan non-governmental organizations - the Coordination for Humanitarian Assistance and MOVE Welfare Organization - implement the project in Hirat Province.
