Current Weekly Wrap-Up:

Administrator Power visited the Dominican Republic to meet with policy makers, community leaders, and local youth. The visit focused on strategies for U.S. support to the Dominican Republic on issues related to crime, violence, and corruption. USAID hosted the inaugural Hispanic-Serving Institutions/Latinx Conference and Career Expo. Congressman Joaquin Castro joined Administrator Power to discuss how USAID is strengthening recruitment efforts in the Latinx community. The World Health Organization recommended use of the first vaccine to fight malaria, a momentous decision that will save lives. The U.S. President's Malaria Initiative released a new five-year strategy, which aims to end malaria within a generation. The U.S. Senate voted to confirm Paloma Adams-Allen as USAID's Deputy Administrator for Management and Resources. Administrator Power spoke at the U.S.-India Business Council's India Ideas Summit. She affirmed the importance of USAID's partnership with USIBC to combat climate change by expanding renewable energy access.

Administrator Power addressed Global Citizen Live to honor and support those suffering from the indirect effects of the virus. USAID committed $295 million to stave off hunger, confront gender-based violence, and fight poverty as we work to end the pandemic. Administrator Power spoke with former U.S. Ambassador to India Richard Verma at the USISPF Annual Leadership Summit. USAID announced a new public-private partnership to advance women's economic empowerment in India. 75 million crisis-affected children and youth across the globe are at risk of missing vital years of education. Administrator Power announced $37 million to the UN fund, Education Cannot Wait, to help bridge the global education gap. USAID's Feed the Future announced four Innovation Lab Partnerships to continue cutting-edge research on agriculture, nutrition, and more. Administrator Power attended the High-Level Side Event on Sudan to affirm global support for the country's historic democratic transition. USAID committed $700 million in additional funding to support ongoing humanitarian needs and to help strengthen democracy.

President Biden addressed the UN General Assembly to affirm the U.S.'s commitment to work with allies to tackle the world's greatest challenges. He shared the Administration's commitment to using the power of aid to invest in new ways of lifting people up around the world. Administrator Power joined President Biden and world leaders to take bold action to save lives and end the pandemic now. Biden announced 500 million more Pfizer vaccines for countries in need, bringing our total to 1.1 billion vaccines, and $345 million additional support from USAID. USAID, with Transparency International, hosted a roundtable with leaders on the frontlines of anti-corruption efforts. USAID is committed to supporting civic actors who are essential partners in the global fight against corruption. At a meeting with Zambian President Hichilema, the Administrator announced $18.5 million to provide support to the Zambian people. Administrator Power addressed the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy to share our commitment to expand global energy access. USAID is working to end energy poverty to unlock the productivity that fuels economic growth.

USAID continues to support the most vulnerable in Afghanistan through an additional $64 million for food, healthcare, and more. Administrator Power spoke with the World Food Programme's David Beasley and Tim Linderking, the U.S. Special Envoy to Yemen. They urgently called for donors to step up life-saving assistance for the people of Yemen. More than a thousand students attended USAID's Historically Black Colleges and Universities Development Conference. Congresswoman Barbara Lee joined Administrator Power to discuss USAID's priority to center racial equity in development. Nearly 8 million vaccines were delivered to help end COVID-19, arriving in Pakistan, Indonesia, Kenya, and more.

Haiti earthquake recovery continues as USAID airlifts emergency shelter supplies to affected communities. USAID partners also provide daily distributions of food, hygeine items, and other critical supplies. Life-saving COVID-19 vaccine deliveries continued this week to Ghana, Kenya, Kosovo, Pakistan, Uganda, and more. We celebrated International Literacy Day by reading Grace in Space with Administrator Power and Astronaut Jessica Meir. This book is one of more than 6,000 books in 83 languages available through USAID's Global Digital Library. This week, we launched @USAIDGender on Twitter, dedicated to amplifying our critical work supporting women and girls around the world.
