USAID/Nigeria COVID-19 Food Security Challenge - 2 grantees awarded, $4 million invested, Working across 33 states in  Nigeria, 19 youth led grantees, 31minnovators new to USAID and 12 women led businesses.

USAID/Nigeria announces the selection of 32 winners of their COVID-19 Food Security Challenge. The winning small and medium enterprises will receive awards totaling $4 million in funding and technical assistance to implement their solutions that improve food security in Nigeria. This competition was run in partnership with USAID’s Exploratory Programs and Innovation Competitions (EPIC) Team in the Innovation, Technology, and Research Hub within the Bureau for Development, Democracy, and Innovation.

USAID Launches New Activity to Empower Deaf in Nigeria Through Sign Language Based Education

On September 23, 2021, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Acting Mission Director Katie Donohoe, together with officials from Gallaudet University, the Nigerian National Association of the Deaf (NNAD), and other partners launched a new activity to empower deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind children and youth through education, employment, and life opportunities in Nigeria.  Federal Senator from Nasarawa Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, who is part of Nigeria’s deaf community, also attended.

On September 7, 2021, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Kathleen FitzGibbon joined Nigerian Federal Director of Public Health Dr. M.O. Alex-Okoh representing Minister of Health Dr. Osagie Ehanaire to mark the closing of a U.S. government activity that made a significant contribution to the HIV response in Nigeria over the last decade. 

USAID Activity Reaches 200,000 Out-Of-School Youth in Conflict-affected Borno and Yobe States

On September 9, 2021, USAID Mission Director Dr. Anne Patterson joined Nigerian education officials and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to mark the closing of a three-year U.S. and UK government-funded activity that significantly increased safe and relevant educational opportunities for children and youth in crisis environments in Nigeria.
