Damaturu, Nigeria – The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting conflict-affected Yobe State in its fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) by donating 150 handwashing stations in five districts across the state. These handwashing stations will be installed in strategic public places that see heavy foot traffic.

Yobe health experts have emphasized the need to facilitate frequent handwashing for improved hygiene and as a means of preventing the spread of COVID-19, and the USAID-donated handwashing stations are aimed at filling this need. USAID handed over the stations at a ceremony in Damaturu attended by senior state officials including the Ministry of Health, the state COVID-19 Rapid Response Team, and staff from the USAID-supported Nigeria Lake Chad Basin activity.

“Through this donation, USAID has displayed an uncommon commitment to the fight against the pandemic in Yobe,” said the Director of State Nursing Services, Dr. Abdullahi Danchua. “This is the largest consignment of handwashing stations we have received from a single partner since the emergence of the pandemic.”

Across the globe, USAID is supporting countries affected by COVID-19 by providing high-quality, transparent, and meaningful assistance.
