USAID Tusome Early Grade Reading is a flagship partnership between USAID and the Government of Kenya’s Ministry of Education. Tusome (“Let’s Read” in Kiswahili) supports literacy development throughout Kenya and fosters a reading culture among grades 1, 2, and 3 learners including children with visual and hearing impairments. Learning to read fluently in primary school is a critical foundational skill and one of the greatest predictors of academic success for a young student. Tusome has provided reading instruction to over 7.8 million students in all public primary schools and is sustainably strengthening Kenya’s education systems. The lessons learned in implementing #Tusome have spread out throughout the educational community on the continent of Africa and elsewhere.
