ACTING ADMINISTRATOR STEELE: On behalf of the Biden-Harris Administration, I am honored to recognize this important moment and the commitments made here today to accelerate equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines globally. Thank you Professor Barosso, Dr. Berkley, and to all of the distinguished guests for joining us here today.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 and its emerging variants demonstrates that no nation can act alone in a global pandemic. Vaccinating as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, is the only way to reduce the tragic loss of life, end the pandemic, and move us toward economic and social recovery.

However, as many have emphasized today, we must root our efforts in equity in order to achieve success. Multilateral cooperation, through the Gavi COVAX Advance Market Commitment, and more broadly within the ACT Accelerator, is key to ensuring that people everywhere receive safe and effective vaccines against a virus that knows no bounds.

I am proud that the initial U.S. contribution of $2 billion to COVAX this year—with another $2 billion planned next year—has helped to galvanize the important commitments made today, and will continue to do so over the coming months. Through partnership and support to the ACT Accelerator, the U.S. Government is also helping to expand global access to COVID-19 therapeutics and diagnostics.

Every year, on March 8th, we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of women and girls globally. Earlier this year, the United States swore in the first female Vice President in our nation's history. Today, there are 22 female heads of state and heads of government around the world. However, March 8th also reminds us of the significant amount of work that needs to be done to address the obstacles that women and girls face. All over the world, for example, the pandemic has exacerbated the situation for women as mothers, caregivers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and all the other roles that they play.

I am honored to be here with you today to support young women entrepreneurs in the province and region.  We are pleased to work with our longstanding partner – Pact Cambodia – who implements the Women Entrepreneurs Act – or WE Act – project.

This year, the U.S. Embassy is showcasing the shared values that drive U.S. and Cambodian cooperation. This quarter, we are focusing on Prosperity and Sustainability, and our support to female entrepreneurs is just one example of our collaboration to help all Cambodians benefit from the country’s growing prosperity.

The United States Agency for International Development, known as USAID, awarded a new three-year project called Local Action Toward TB Free Myanmar in August 2020. The Myanmar civil society organization Pyi Gyi Khin is our partner in implementing this project.  USAID introduced the new project to the Ministry of Health and Sports in October 2020 in a meeting with development partners supporting the effort to end TB in Myanmar. USAID Mission Director Aler Grubbs and I joined Dr. Thandar Lwin, Deputy Director General of Disease Control at that meeting.
