Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Save the Children-US CEO Janti Soeripto to discuss the humanitarian situation and the status of women and girls in Afghanistan.

Administrator Power highlighted that the United States condemns the Taliban’s actions to severely restrict the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, including their edict banning women from working for NGOs that provide critical humanitarian aid to the Afghan people. USAID, alongside the international community, continues to call on the Taliban to urgently reverse this harmful decision. Administrator Power and Ms. Soeripto discussed opportunities for how the international donor community can continue to support NGOs in navigating the very complex operating environment in Afghanistan.

Administrator Power reiterated that USAID will continue to work closely with other key donors to advocate for expansion of the space for principled aid delivery to the people of Afghanistan, while also doing what we can to prevent the humanitarian situation from deteriorating further as a result of the increasingly difficult operating environment the Taliban have created. Ms. Soeripto additionally discussed Save the Children’s response to the earthquake in Türkiye and Syria and ongoing efforts to scale up humanitarian response in Northern Ethiopia.
