The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in coordination with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, is providing an additional $4.5 billion in direct budgetary support to the Government of Ukraine to help alleviate the acute budget deficit caused by Putin’s brutal war of aggression. The Government of Ukraine will receive the funding in tranches, beginning with a $3 billion disbursement in August. This contribution was made possible with generous bipartisan support from Congress.

On August 6, Administrator Samantha Power arrived in Bogotá, Colombia, where she is leading the Presidential Delegation to attend the Inauguration of His Excellency Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego as President of the Republic of Colombia. Administrator Power began her trip by hosting a roundtable discussion with human rights defenders to hear directly about their experiences, work to support conflict victims, and efforts to advance implementation of the 2016 Peace Accord.
On August 6-8, 2022, Administrator Samantha Power will travel to Bogotá, Colombia, as the head of the U.S. delegation that will attend the inauguration of Colombia’s President-Elect, Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego.

The U.S. says 40 million people have become hungry since Russia invaded Ukraine. The war is combined with COVID, rising food prices, and the worst drought in a hundred years in East Africa. A Senegalese minister recently warned more people could die from the food crisis than die from COVID. Among the most acutely affected: Afghanistan where 20 million people, more than half of the country, are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity; Yemen where 19 million are food insecure, and the Horn of Africa where the UN says there is 37 million people suffer from acute hunger.
Today, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with Guatemalan Foreign Minister Mario Búcaro. During the meeting, Administrator Power and Minister Búcaro discussed USAID’s longstanding commitment to the people of Guatemala and the importance of maintaining and deepening that partnership. Administrator Power highlighted USAID’s continuous efforts to combat food insecurity.

On August 3, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with Jose Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste about a range of shared priorities and continued cooperation between the two countries. The Administrator and the President spoke about the importance of democratic governance and press freedom in Timor-Leste. They also discussed regional security and the importance of standing up for human rights across Southeast Asia.
The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is providing $106 million in additional humanitarian assistance through the UN World Food Program (WFP) for the people of South Sudan, who continue to experience the devastating effects of violence, food insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, and successive years of widespread flooding–all of which are compounded by impacts resulting from Russia’s unprovoked war against Ukraine.
Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the Supporting, Mobilizing, and Accelerating Research for Tuberculosis Elimination (SMART4TB) project. SMART4TB, a five-year initiative, will invest up to $200 million, subject to availability of funding, to identify more effective methods and tools for finding, treating, and preventing tuberculosis (TB) in USAID’s 24 priority countries for TB programming.

Today, USAID Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman met with Dr. Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe. They discussed the United States’ and the WHO’s coordinated response to support Ukraine and the country’s health system recovery, and shared that USAID will provide an additional $1.8 million in funding to WHO to strengthen infectious disease surveillance and reporting in Ukraine.
On August 1, Administrator Samantha Power met with Sean Callahan, CEO of Catholic Relief Services, to discuss the ongoing crises and challenges in Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Central America, the devastation caused by Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine, as well as to express appreciation for USAID’s long-standing partnership with Catholic Relief Services.
