Mark A. White, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor, has joined the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in India as the new Mission Director. Mr. White assumes leadership as USAID leverages India’s growing human and financial resources through partnerships that catalyze innovation and entrepreneurship to solve critical local and global development challenges. He was sworn in on February 24 in Washington by USAID Acting Administrator Wade Warren.

Herscowitz announced $4 million in new investments to eight companies that are revolutionizing household solar power across Africa through the Scaling Off-Grid Energy: Grand Challenge for Development. Each year, World Malaria Day is observed to call attention to the disease and to mobilize action to combat it. On this occasion, the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), led by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), releases its sixth annual report which describes the role and contributions of the U.S. Government in the effort to reduce the burden of malaria in Africa, and to monitor antimalarial drug resistance and decrease malaria transmission in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

UNICEF has confirmed to a group of donors that an estimated US$4 million of donor funds has been misappropriated from its US$6.2 million school rehabilitation project implemented in 2009-2010 in Khyber Paktunkhwa Province, northwestern Pakistan.

UNICEF first uncovered irregularities in the project via its internal financial oversight system in 2010, and alerted a group of donors in Pakistan to the potential loss of funds in October of that year.
