The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today three awards made through the $1 million Fuel-efficient Cookstove Distribution in Kenya Grants Competition, a major component of USAID’s Developing a Sustainable Cookstove Sector project.  This project supports the development of private sector-driven markets that will promote the widespread adoption of clean, efficient cooking solutions among the 2.8 billion people worldwide who lack modern cooking stoves and fuels.

U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Rajiv Shah is traveling to Denmark and Sweden to announce partnerships with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Volvo Group.  The collaboration is a mutual commitment to develop more efficient methods to solve today’s development challenges.

Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Humanity United announced the winners of the Model Challenge, the final round of the Tech Challenge for Atrocity Prevention.  Managed in collaboration with the Harvard-NASA Tournament Lab, the NASA Center of Excellence for Collaborative Innovation, and TopCoder, the Model Challenge asked problem solvers to create algorithmic models that can help forecast when and where mass atrocities are likely to occur.  The winning algorithms will help human rights organizations and governments create tools that make it easier to identify at-risk regions, leading to more effective atrocity prevention efforts.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the three winning partnerships selected under its Higher Education Partnerships to Support the U.S.-Burma Commitment to Democracy, Peace and Prosperity. These partnerships build upon President Obama’s call to “extend a hand” to Burma in its progress toward democracy.

The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced partnerships with three private banks in Latin America that will make available $98.5 million in local lending exclusively for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). “If we are going to succeed in ending the need for donor aid, we need to scale private sector solutions like these, which make financing development sustainable,” said Mark Feierstein, Assistant Administrator of USAID’s Latin America and the Caribbean Bureau.

On Friday, Super Typhoon Haiyan swept across the Philippines with the strength of one of the most powerful storms ever to hit land.  In response to the storm, the United States Government announced today $20 million in humanitarian assistance, including emergency food aid and critical relief supplies--like shelter materials and hygiene kits--for disaster-affected areas.
