Administrator Samantha Power met virtually with Central American and Mexican foreign ministers today to discuss shared migration challenges and opportunities in the region. The meeting was convened by Secretary Blinken on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly.
Administrator Power highlighted USAID’s ongoing humanitarian assistance to the region, including lifesaving support to help countries address COVID-19. The Administrator reiterated USAID’s commitment to address the chronic drivers of irregular migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras under the Biden-Harris Administration’s Root Causes and Collaborative Migration Management strategies, and underscored USAID’s partnerships with local civil society and the private sector in these efforts. She emphasized our partnership with Mexico and the Mexican development agency, AMEXCID, in the region. She delivered a message to the ministers that sustainable progress in the region is dependent on promoting responsive, democratic governance and addressing corruption.
USAID looks forward to deepening our partnerships in the region based on a shared commitment to democracy, equality, and opportunity. Together, we can advance security and prosperity so that the people of the region can confidently build their lives at home.
